#P90X Day 23: Kenpo X

Kenpo
Kenpo X

"Faster and with some noise!"

What, no Core Synergistics today? Nope. Today I was supposed to do my first go at Core Synergistics, but I switched Kenpo X and Core Syn. today and tomorrow, so Pandia (my gorgeous wife) will have the opportunity to try Core Syn. with me.

On to Kenpo…..

What a hellish workout this morning – in both the good and the bad ways. I had the genius idea to workout in sweats this morning, with the heat on in the apartment. I wanted to get the most out of my heart rate and when I woke up, I felt like a boulder sinking. It was just so hard to get out of that Deep Sleep Fog. But, I persevered, got up, got dressed and got busy.

I’ve done Kenpo X now quite a few times. I know the drill and I love it. The oddest thing happened though. I reached a point fairly early on in the workout where my arms were just exhausted. My muscles almost all over just felt deflated, without energy, tired.

I’ve not felt that since I came down from the rush of the KC 1/2 Marathon last year. It was like my body was void of all nutrients and energy. I’ve worked out plenty in the mornings, so it’s not a new thing for my body to be worked at 5am, but this – this was just odd. It actually scared me a bit. I felt like I wasn’t fully in control of my physical faculties and, as many of you know, that’s something I hate with a fervent passion.

My diet has been nearly identical this entire month, as I’ve followed the P90X nutrition guide, so I’m honestly at a loss as to why I was so depleted. Last night, I was even hungry before bed and I did a protein drink just so I wouldn’t be ravenous when I got up this morning. So odd, indeed.

Anyway, the whole of the workout went fine. No hiccups. My hips felt sore form Yoga, and my left hamstring was still being an a$$ to me about working it. But outside some limited leg mobility, the workout went off without a hitch. My right side and back kicks were lower than my left due to the Great Hamstring Debacle of 2010.

Wearing a hoodie and sweatpants really kept me in the zone, but not as much as I was anticipating.

GETTING FIT OR GETTING SLOW?

One thing I have seen, as I document my workouts and blog about them is that my HR and burned calories is consistently falling, yet I feel like I’m giving it my very best when I workout.

I know that as my level of fitness increases I’ll see both a reduction in how hard my heart works doing something I’ve done for a full month and I’ll see my calories drop since my heart’s not working as hard as it needed to previously. I know also that I’ll see my heart rate come down my quickly after a workout and it’ll come down farther as my heart and respiratory system continue to utilize blood and oxygen more efficiently.

I wonder if, upon next weeks’ move into Phase 2, I’ll soon forget about this, as I’ll be on a new plateau of fitness and challenges.

So, sports fans, I pose the question to you: What has your experience been with calories and heart rate as you’ve progressed through P90X? Do you see yourself adapting or not?

I look forward to your comments.
